COVID-19 vaccine update webinar to be hosted by West Virginia Immunization Network

On Wednesday, Aug. 31, the Food and Drug Administration authorized new booster shots targeted at the Omicron BA.4/BA.5 strains of SARS-CoV-2. The CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices will discuss and vote on the use of these vaccines in their meeting on Sept. 1, 2022.

This West Virginia COVID-19 Vaccine Update webinar on Friday, Sept. 16, from noon to 1 p.m. will provide a situational update of the COVID-19 pandemic, the SARS COV-2 variants that are currently circulating, and the West Virginia response. It will also provide an overview of the recommendations for the Omicron COVID-19 booster shots and clinical guidance for administering these vaccines.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

1. State the CDC’s recommendations for COVID-19 Omicron booster vaccination;
2. Describe clinical considerations for administering the Omicron COVID-19 booster vaccines; and
3. Understand and apply data-driven communication strategies for communicating with the public to boost COVID-19 vaccination confidence.

Speakers

• Krista D. Capehart, PharmD, MS, BCACP, FAPhA, is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Director of the Wigner Institute for Advanced Pharmacy Practice, Education and Research at West Virginia University School of Pharmacy. She is also the Director of Professional and Regulatory Affairs at the West Virginia Board of Pharmacy.
• Lisa M. Costello, MD, MPH, FAAP, is an assistant professor in the Department Pediatrics at West Virginia University (WVU) and a Pediatric Hospitalist at WVU Medicine Children’s Hospital.
• Julia Daisy Fraustino, PhD, is an assistant professor in the Reed College of Media at West Virginia University, where she is founding director of the Public Interest Communication Research Laboratory (PIC Research Lab) in the Media Innovation Center.
