Disability Day of Mourning is recognized by the disability community every year on March 1 to honor and remember those disabled people murdered by their caregivers.
A display commemorating the event will be available for viewing in the WVU Health Sciences Center Pylons Commons Feb. 28 through March 1. All members of the community are welcome to visit the display at their convenience.
Disability Day of Mourning also draws attention to how the murder of disabled people by parents and caregivers is a pattern of violence that is often perpetuated by how these murders are excused, discussed, justified, reported and repeated. We recognize Disability Day of Mourning is recognized to honor the dead in order to continue to fight for the living.
This event is presented by the Medical Students with Disability and Chronic Illness student organization. MSDCI at WVU is committed to providing a supportive space for disabled, chronically ill and neurodivergent students and their allies in order to improve access to medical education for disabled students, decrease the prevalence of ableism in medicine and foster ties with the local disability community.
