MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Paul Lockman, Ph.D., has joined the West Virginia University School of Pharmacy as the
Douglas D. Glover Endowed Chair of the Department of Basic Pharmaceutical Sciences and the associate director of translational research at the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center (MBRCC).
Dr. Lockman came to WVU from the Texas Tech University School of Pharmacy, where he was the associate dean for assessment and accreditation.
As the chair of the WVU Department of Basic Pharmaceutical Sciences, Lockman will work with other faculty members on teaching assignments, as well as grant submissions and management. He will also be responsible for the departmental budget and using resources to ensure faculty success in both teaching and research, will work with the School’s executive council on department- and school-related matters and will represent the department and school to the university.
At the MBRCC, Lockman will work with faculty members to further develop research to improve a person’s well-being by making basic pharmaceutical findings more practical. His research focuses on improving the treatment of breast cancer and prevention of the cancer spreading to the brain, a difficult area to treat with drug therapy.
“If the breast cancer becomes metastatic, or disseminates to the brain, 80 percent of women will die within one year and nearly 100 percent within two years,” Lockman said. “My laboratory is focused on improving treatment regimens. Just as importantly, we are trying to outright stop the development of brain metastases. We hope that this work will eventually improve the lives of all women with breast cancer.”
Lockman also has appointment as associate professor in the Department of Basic Pharmaceutical Sciences, and is excited to continue teaching in addition to his other roles.

The WVU School of Pharmacy has a stellar reputation and is ranked among the best pharmacy schools in the nation.
