LOGAN, W. Va. — The WVU School of Nursing recently organized a Project MUSHROOM (Multidisciplinary UnSheltered Homeless Relief Outreach Of Morgantown) outreach event to support individuals in need of assistance in Logan.

Led by Clinical Lecturer Sydney Wiley, eight nursing students assisted with 30 health screenings, as well as distribution of 54 Narcan kits, wound kits and first aid supplies. The group hosted the event in conjunction with a food pantry.

“I wanted to show students a different part of the state and show healthcare gaps that may exist in other parts of the state,” Wiley said. “I am originally from Logan County, living in a community called Lake, West Virginia, until I went to WVU in 2015. Southern WV and Northern WV have many differences and similarities, and I think you need to experience both to understand that.”

Wiley said a major takeaway for the students was that people in the southern part of the state often rely on one another as a community to meet their needs.

“They noted that they look out for one another,” she said. “They also noted that many of the people screen were gathering wound/health supplies for family members and friends as well. Many participants also took Narcan kits and stated they would like to have them on hand in case an overdose were to happen in their family or in their community.”
