What Is the Bowl of Hygeia?

Hygeia, the ancient goddess of healing, prepared the remedies prescribed by her physician father, Asclepius. Hygeia is usually shown carrying a bowl or chalice that contains the patient’s prescribed remedy. This ceremony marks the transition of the student from the classroom to the world of the patient, from that of theory to one of practice.

To commemorate this transition, each student will receive a lapel pin that identifies them as a member of the WVU School of Pharmacy wherever they go during their experiential rotations.
